Maintenance dredging in the small canals in Amsterdam is a continuous operation. In the crowded capital city of the Netherlands tour boats and other vessels use the canals on a daily basis. The maintenance dredge is therefore not allowed to block the waterway. An other challenge was the many narrow and low bridges it needed to pass. This special backhoe is equipped with independent fully retractable spuds. These legs on every corner give the small dipper dredge its stability on every type of soil during the dredging operation. When the dredger need to move to another location the dredger is designed to retract the spuds and lay them on the deck. Al other high parts of the dredger can be lowered to pass bridges. The dredger has an air draft of only 1.75 meter.
